The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2024 is about proteins, life’s ingenious chemical tools. David Baker has succeeded with the almost impossible feat of building entirely new kinds of proteins. Demis Hassabis and John Jumper have developed an AI model to solve a 50-year-old problem: predicting proteins’ complex structures. These discoveries hold enormous potential.
這一些機器學習 (深度學習) 的模型，是根據基礎的數學、物理、化學、和生物學的研究。不過，就知識論 (Epistemology) 的角度，深度學習依然是個黑盒子，我們尚且不知道其完整的運作模式；根據 LeCun 演講 (1)，人類歷史中，有許多例子，都是先有工程實作，後來才找到或發明其理論基礎 (2)。
理學院在學術的位階上，是最高的。現在頒發獎項給接近工程的研究，意義非凡；也代表這個領域的重要性。
